How to attract Ladybirds / Ladybugs to your garden for Aphid Control
How to attract ladybirds to your garden.
I’ve been doing some trials over the last two years. Working out what seems to be best to attract ladybirds often known as ladybugs into the garden, to be able to use them as natural predators for aphid control. I love my lupins and each year they seem to attract more and more aphids.
I’ve now purchased a ladybird hotel along with food to help attract the beneficial bugs to the garden. I have also planted 2 dill plants with the aim to make this a suitable breeding ground / home for ladybirds.
Planting the following plants and herbs help attract Ladybirds to your garden, which in turn will eat your pest aphids. I love my lupins and have found attracting ladybirds and lacewings a great and natural way of garden pest control for aphids.
These plants produce pollen whose flavour the ladybugs love:
- Angelica
- Calendula
- Caraway
- Chives
- Cilantro
- Coreopsis
- Cosmos
- Dandelions
- Dill
- Fennel
- Feverfew
- Marigold
- Scented geraniums
- Statice
- Sweet alyssum
- Tansy
- Wild carrot
- Yarrow
Im currently trialling Dill and Marigolds, but also letting some of this years carrots go to seed to see if the ladybugs love these too.
A bug hotel either handmade or purchased can be a good investment to enable your ladybirds to grow into bigger numbers for your garden, one similar to this.

If left untreated, this is how an Aphid colony can take over your lovely lupin plants… so its well worth attracting ladybirds to your garden. Even if just only planting one new variety of beneficial ladybug plant such as Dill.
